Bonjour, mes amis!
I get a lot of questions about the books I’m reading, the genres I prefer, recommendations, et cetera et cetera. So I’m like, why not make it a thing? Lol I’m super excited to start this new series here at from the city, with love: Ri’s Read (cute or nah? It’s still growing on me lol). Every month, I’m gonna post a review of what I read the previous month, along with a quick peek at what I’m currently reading.
So… let’s hop right in.
What I Read
The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of Your Life
Okay, let me start off by admitting that I really wanted to adore this book. I am very spiritual, and I’ve long held philosophies about our connection to the universe, manifestation, energy, awareness, and so on. It’s one of those things I could ramble on about all day, but that’s neither here nor there.
Deepak’s book starts off super strong–it’s enlightening and insightful off the bat. It’s a self-help guide that’s split into 15 chapters, each dedicated to a particular “secret” that’s supposed to help you unlock the hidden dimensions within yourself and thus, achieve a state of pure Being.
In the first chapter, he discusses how our bodily wisdom already demonstrates the qualities of spiritual wisdom, at a physical, cellular level. This theme of connecting spiritual concepts with material manifestations continues throughout the book. I loved this, as I have been saying for the longest that we are the universe, manifesting itself. We can find bits and pieces of cosmic influence all throughout our everyday lives, if we pay enough attention.
I won’t go too deeply into the philosophies Deepak discusses, or we’d be here all day lol. Some of them thoroughly resonated with me; others were a little too abstract for me to really grasp. This is where I have mixed feelings. I feel like you have to already have a solid sense of spirituality and self-awareness to comprehend some of the ideas that are explored. The book is very mystical at times; sometimes overly so. It might be better suited for someone who is already well on their spiritual journey–not someone looking to start it.
The Bottom Line
Honestly, this book requires an open mind and your full attention. It is packed with insight, albeit sometimes kinda complex… even obscure. It’s one of those books that might need a second read, and you’ll definitely wanna take some notes. At certain points, Deepak contradicts himself, which diminishes his credibility a bit. Regardless, there are some profound takeaways if you’re into spirituality.
Would I recommend it? Eh, it depends. Like I said, I have mixed feelings. I wouldn’t call it required reading, especially if you don’t have the patience for abstract ideas or are looking for some beginner’s guides to spirituality.
On the flip side, there were plenty really valuable lightbulb moments throughout the book, and it’s worth a read if you’re interested in broadening your perspective. What excited me the most was reading passages that seemed to literally come from the back of my mind lol. But then again, I’m into spirituality and our relationship with the universe heavy.
What I’m Reading
Just Mercy
Right on theme for Black History month, yes? I’m so excited to read this before I see the movie.
Check out the synopsis:
I’m about three chapters in and I’m already pissed lol. I know how grimy this country is, but blatant systemic racism still baffles me. But eh, we’ll see how this goes. Check back in at the top of next month for a full review!
